The launch of Google Drive this week (Google’s cloud storage offering) has generated a lot of interest and comparisons with other cloud storage providers such as DropBox, Microsoft’s SkyDrive, and Apple’s iCloud. Some of the blogs and news articles, such as one by the Guardian, have focussed on showing the cost structures of each of the offerings and on wondering how well Google will be able to compete against the more established service providers.

The cloud as a technology is neither complex nor interesting. However, what is significant is the truly transformational nature of what it enables business to do. The cloud provides a mechanism by which organisations can significantly reduce costs and complexity, and can execute change quickly with minimal risk. Capital investment in the initial stages of a project using “cloud” is extremely low, and yet ownership costs remain under control even at scale.
The ability to start new initiatives and respond to change quickly and efficiently is truly game changing.

Back in June 2011 I presented on Future Technology Trends at the Iris NFP conference and one of the major themes was the emergence of cloud, which I predicted would shape the future for many organisations. Since that date I have been astonished at the speed at which cloud technologies have bridged the chasm from early adopters to mainstream.

I recently attended a briefing at the offices of IRIS, where IRIS introduced their new hosting proposition which targets amongst others the Not For profit Sector. The presentation was well attended by IT managers from a number of existing IRIS clients who I believe found the presentation interesting and informative.
