Head in the Clouds?

26 APR 2012 | Posted in business value, cloud computing | Author Rob Newman

The launch of Google Drive this week (Google’s cloud storage offering) has generated a lot of interest and comparisons with other cloud storage providers such as DropBox, Microsoft’s SkyDrive, and Apple’s iCloud. Some of the blogs and news articles, such as one by the Guardian, have focussed on showing the cost structures of each of the offerings and on wondering how well Google will be able to compete against the more established service providers.

The Cloud is a huge opportunity for organisations to improve speed to market, provide operational resilience and increase value for money. However, there are complexities that need to be considered and you need to be careful to select a solution that is appropriate for your business.

IndigoBlue has extensive experience of Cloud technologies and their practical use for business advantage. Our Cloud Strategy helps clients understand, evaluate and access the great potential and business benefits of rapidly maturing Cloud technologies.

Ours is an experience-based approach to Cloud enablement of clients’ businesses. We have implemented cloud solutions in a wide variety of organisations, including:

There’s a danger that the overuse and misuse of the word “cloud” can lead to apathy and ultimately put your business at a disadvantage by not harnessing the overwhelming benefits that cloud computing can deliver. This paper highlights how cloud computing is a mature technology, with the launch of Hotmail in 1996 heralding the dawn of an new era in the consumerisation of technology and explains in plain terms what cloud computing is.

The Cloud as a Transformational Business Tool

Overview

The cloud as a technology is neither complex nor interesting. However, what is significant is the truly transformational nature of what it enables business to do. The cloud provides a mechanism by which organisations can significantly reduce costs and complexity, and can execute change quickly with minimal risk. Capital investment in the initial stages of a project using “cloud” is extremely low, and yet ownership costs remain under control even at scale.

The ability to start new initiatives and respond to change quickly and efficiently is truly game changing.

The Rise and Rise of the Cloud

23 JAN 2012 | Posted in business strategy, cloud computing | Author Rob Smith | 1 Comment

Back in June 2011 I presented on Future Technology Trends at the Iris NFP conference and one of the major themes was the emergence of cloud, which I predicted would shape the future for many organisations. Since that date I have been astonished at the speed at which cloud technologies have bridged the chasm from early adopters to mainstream.

I recently attended a briefing at the offices of IRIS, where IRIS introduced their new hosting proposition which targets amongst others the Not For profit Sector. The presentation was well attended by IT managers from a number of existing IRIS clients who I believe found the presentation interesting and informative.

Microsoft has recently announced the enhancement of their cloud offerings with Microsoft Office 365, which integrates Office Professional, Exchange, SharePoint and the Lync communications suite.
